WHAT IS COGNIVUE®?
Objective, Proactive Brain Health Evaluation
CogniVue® is an FDA-cleared, computerized cognitive assessment designed to objectively measure brain function and detect meaningful changes early — often before they become disruptive to daily life. At Stages of Life Medical Institute in Longwood, FL, we use CogniVue as a core component of our cognitive health evaluation pathway, paired with physician review and, when appropriate, Alzheimer's blood biomarker testing.
The assessment takes approximately 20 minutes to complete in our office. It is painless, non-invasive, and computer-driven. Because CogniVue is largely language-independent and minimally influenced by education level, it produces more consistent and reproducible results than traditional pen-and-paper screening tools. It is available to both new and existing patients, with no special preparation required.
Cognitive changes often develop gradually and can be difficult to recognize through conversation or routine office visits alone. CogniVue provides objective, reproducible data that supports accurate differential diagnosis, informs safer medication decisions, and guides long-term care planning.
WHAT GETS MEASURED
What CogniVue® Evaluates
CogniVue® measures five cognitive domains independently — providing a multi-dimensional picture of brain function rather than a single composite score.
Memory
Evaluates the ability to encode and retrieve information. Often the first symptom patients notice.
Attention
Measures sustained and divided attention. Impaired by sleep disorders, anxiety, and medication effects.
Executive Function
Assesses planning, problem-solving, and decision-making. Can decline before memory in some conditions.
Processing Speed
Measures how quickly the brain processes information. Slowed by vascular disease, thyroid disorders, and metabolic dysfunction.
Visuospatial Ability
Evaluates spatial reasoning and visual perception. Associated with Lewy body dementia and related conditions.
WHY IT MATTERS
Why Objective Cognitive Testing Matters
Many medical conditions can affect cognition, and some may be treatable when identified early. Subjective impressions alone often fail to distinguish normal aging from medically significant change. By the time cognitive decline becomes obvious in daily life, it has frequently been progressing for years.
CogniVue® provides objective, reproducible data that clinical observation cannot. When Dr. Klein evaluates a patient for pain management, hormone therapy, or a new concern about memory, CogniVue results can help indicate whether cognitive symptoms may be related to a potentially treatable cause - or whether they reflect a pattern consistent with early neurodegenerative disease that warrants further evaluation.
A patient whose cognitive symptoms stem from untreated sleep apnea, low thyroid function, or vitamin B12 deficiency does not need an Alzheimer's workup - they need those conditions treated. CogniVue, paired with comprehensive laboratory evaluation, helps point the clinical pathway in the right direction from the outset.
WHO SHOULD CONSIDER TESTING
Is CogniVue® Right for You?
You or a family member has noticed changes in memory, attention, or mental clarity
You take medications that may affect cognitive function
You are being evaluated for a hormonal imbalance, thyroid disorder, or metabolic condition
You have a personal or family history of Alzheimer's disease or dementia
You have untreated or recently treated obstructive sleep apnea
You want to establish an objective cognitive baseline for annual monitoring
You are over 50 and have never had objective cognitive testing
You have had a significant recent change in health status
CogniVue® supports — but does not replace — a full clinical evaluation. Results are always reviewed in the context of your medical history, medications, and laboratory findings.

Because the assessment is largely language-independent and minimally influenced by education level, it produces consistent results across a wide range of patients.
3
Review Results With Dr. Klein
Results are available for physician review promptly after testing. Dr. Klein reviews your scores across all five cognitive domains in the context of your full medical history and laboratory findings. You leave with clear next steps in plain language — not just a printout of numbers.
4
Ongoing Annual Monitoring
Dr. Klein recommends annual CogniVue® testing for most patients to establish a reliable cognitive baseline and detect meaningful trends over time. Testing may also be repeated sooner if there is a change in medical condition, new symptoms, or a medication adjustment where cognitive impact should be measured.
Why Annual Testing?
A single CogniVue® result is informative. Serial results over years are transformative. Establishing a baseline while cognition is normal means that even subtle changes — which may precede symptoms by years — can be detected and acted on early.
Annual monitoring is also valuable for patients managing chronic conditions, medications, or hormonal changes that can affect brain health over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CogniVue® Questions & Answers
ABOUT COGNIVUE®
What is CogniVue®?
CogniVue® is an FDA-cleared, computerized cognitive assessment tool used in primary care settings. It objectively measures brain function across five cognitive domains — memory, attention, executive function, processing speed, and visuospatial ability — and detects early signs of cognitive impairment that may not yet be apparent through conversation or routine office visits.
How is CogniVue® different from traditional cognitive tests like the MMSE or MoCA?
Traditional tests rely on pen-and-paper formats that can be influenced by education level, language background, and test-day anxiety. CogniVue® is computer-driven, largely language-independent, and minimally affected by education level — producing more consistent and reproducible results. FDA pivotal studies demonstrated equal to or superior predictability and repeatability compared to standardized written and oral tests.
How long does the CogniVue® test take?
The assessment takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. It is performed on-site at Stages of Life Medical Institute in Longwood, FL. No special preparation is required before the test.
How much does CogniVue® cost, and is it covered by insurance?
The fee is $300. Medicare coverage may vary by plan. Please call 407-679-3337 to verify eligibility and any out-of-pocket costs before your appointment.
WHO SHOULD BE TESTED
Do I need to be an existing patient to schedule CogniVue® testing?
No. CogniVue® testing is available to both new and existing patients. No referral is required. You may schedule by calling 407-679-3337 or submitting the new patient request form online.
My doctor says my labs are normal, but I'm still having memory problems. Can CogniVue® help?
Yes — this is exactly the situation CogniVue® is designed for. Cognitive symptoms often have treatable underlying causes including hormonal imbalance, thyroid dysfunction, sleep disorders, vitamin deficiencies, and medication side effects that may not show up on standard panels. If your CogniVue results are not consistent with a neurodegenerative pattern, Dr. Klein will evaluate and treat the most likely cause directly.
Should cognitive testing be done more than once?
Yes. Annual CogniVue® testing is recommended to establish a reliable cognitive baseline and track changes over time. Testing may be repeated sooner if there is a new symptom, a significant change in health status, or a medication adjustment where cognitive impact should be measured. Serial testing is how meaningful early changes are identified.
UNDERSTANDING RESULTS
What happens after I complete the assessment?
Results are available for physician review promptly after the test. Dr. Klein reviews your scores across all five cognitive domains in the context of your full medical history, current medications, and any relevant laboratory findings. He explains results in plain language with clear next steps — whether that is a follow-up lab panel, further evaluation, a medication adjustment, or confirmation that your cognitive function is within normal range.
Can CogniVue® diagnose Alzheimer's disease?
No. CogniVue® is a cognitive assessment tool that supports clinical decision-making — it does not diagnose Alzheimer's disease or any other specific condition on its own. A concerning result guides Dr. Klein toward additional evaluation, which may include Alzheimer's blood biomarker testing (measuring the Aβ42/40 ratio and p-tau217), imaging, or specialty referral. Results are always one piece of a broader clinical picture.
What treatable conditions can cause cognitive symptoms?
Many conditions can cause cognitive symptoms that mimic or contribute to dementia, including obstructive sleep apnea, thyroid disorders, hormonal imbalance (low testosterone, estrogen decline, cortisol dysregulation), vitamin B12 deficiency, insulin resistance, depression, anxiety, urinary tract infections (particularly in older adults), and medication side effects — especially benzodiazepines, opioids, and anticholinergics. When CogniVue results are not consistent with a neurodegenerative pattern, Dr. Klein can evaluate potential contributing factors and recommend an appropriate care plan.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Can CogniVue® testing help evaluate the effects of my medications on my thinking?
Yes. Many commonly prescribed medications can impair memory, attention, or processing speed. CogniVue® testing before and after a medication change provides objective, measurable data on cognitive impact. This helps Dr. Klein assess whether a drug is adversely affecting brain function, refine dosing, or select a better-tolerated alternative.
Is there a way to keep my results off my insurance records?
Yes. For an additional $150, Dr. Klein can keep your results confidential and off insurance records as a private pay service. This means results will not be visible to insurers or employers. This option is also available for Alzheimer's blood biomarker testing.
